JAZZ : MICHAEL KAMEN DAVID SANBORN “Concerto for Saxophone” <i> Warner Bros.</i> * * 1/2

Kamen’s “Concerto” is a murky, three-movement tour through a series of orchestrated film music settings. Little of any technical significance is demanded of soloist Sanborn, who plays, nonetheless, with a warmer, less-pinched tone than is often the case on his own recordings.

Four other Kamen pieces--all titled with women’s names--are sometimes laid-back to the point of somnolence. Sanborn manages to insert snippets of character here and there, and the presence of Eric Clapton on one track helps a bit. But the resources of the National Philharmonic Orchestra and a collection of first-rate players are generally lost in a cloud of unfocused sounds.
