American Airlines Pressures Union: The airline said it would “begin an appropriate plan of asset disposal” if forced to accept contract demands from its 9,000 pilots. American raised the stakes as contract talks got under way in Washington under the guidance of a federal mediator. American has said pilot sickout forced it to suspend 11% of its flight schedule, including the Los Angeles-San Francisco run. But the union has said that many pilots have the flu, and that American planned to drop flights anyway.
