NATION : Japan to Hike U.S. Troop Funds

TOKYO — Japan’s foreign minister will meet Secretary of State James A. Baker III in Washington next week to sign an agreement raising Tokyo’s share of the cost of maintaining U.S. troops in Japan, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said today.
Foreign Minister Taro Nakayama will visit Washington from Jan. 13 to 17 to meet Baker and government and congressional leaders.
The Japanese government agreed last month to increase its contribution toward the maintenance of 40,000 U.S. military personnel in Japan from $3.3 billion a year to $4 billion by 1996. Nakayama and Baker will sign an accord formally recognizing this.
The agenda for the talks has not been fixed and there were many subjects to be discussed, an aide said.
The two have coordinated closely on the Persian Gulf crisis and the fact that Baker had agreed to see Nakayama at such a time shows the United States wants to step up cooperation in that area.
