Muslim Gets Probation in Incident With Deputies

A Nation of Islam member who pleaded no contest to assaulting a sheriff’s deputy and taking his gun during a street fight in which a fellow Muslim was killed was sentenced Friday to one year of summary probation.
The action by Torrance Superior Court Judge Cecil J. Mills brought to an end a case that had heightened tensions between law enforcement and the black community.
The defendant, David Charles Hartley, 19, was wounded by gunfire during the Jan. 23, 1990, confrontation on West 106th Street in the Athens district of Los Angeles County.
Another man, Oliver Beasley, 27, died during the confrontation after he was shot once in the head.
