The City Council on Wednesday honored Police Chief Carmine Lanza for 20 years of service.
Lanza joined the department Jan. 16, 1971, fresh out of Rio Hondo Police Academy, where he graduated first in his class.
He was quickly promoted to detective and rose through the ranks, becoming chief in 1989. Lanza, who lives with his wife and children in West Covina, has also served as acting city manager.
He said he was “looking forward to serving his next 20 years” in Baldwin Park.
