Rockets’ Maxwell Scores 30 in Fourth Quarter, 51 in Game

Vernon Maxwell joined an elite group Saturday night.
The Houston Rockets’ 6-4 guard scored 30 of his 51 points in the fourth quarter at Houston and his team needed most of them to subdue the Cleveland Cavaliers, 103-97.
Maxwell, in his third NBA season, became only the fourth player to score 30 points in a quarter.
George Gervin of San Antonio had 33 on April 9, 1978, to clinch the scoring title after Denver’s David Thompson had scored 32 in a quarter earlier the same day. Wilt Chamberlain was the first, getting 31 in the fourth quarter, March 2, 1962, the game he scored 100.
“It’s a shock getting that many points,” Maxwell said. “I felt good shooting all night and in the last quarter I couldn’t miss.”
