PHILIPPINES: Philippine tourism continues to suffer from natural disasters and political turmoil. Battered in the past 15 months by a coup attempt, typhoons, floods and an earthquake, segments of the country’s tourism industry are beginning to lay off workers. The number of tourists visiting the country fell to about 1 million in 1990 from a record 1.2 million in 1989. Hotel and resort owners say business in the first seven weeks of 1991 was worse than the same period in 1990, when occupancies hit record lows in the aftermath of a failed December, 1989, military coup attempt.
