General Motors Plant in Van Nuys Remains Idle

General Motors Corp. said its Van Nuys assembly plant remains closed this week because of slow car sales.
The plant, which employs 3,200 and is GM’s sole source of the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, has been temporarily closed several times in recent months as GM tries to pare its swelling inventories of unsold cars.
Since Dec. 17, for example, the Van Nuys plant has produced cars on only 20 days. Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. also have been periodically idling various plants to reduce their supplies.
