A firefighter suffered burns Tuesday while trying to start a controlled fire near Topanga, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
The 45-year-old camp crew foreman was flown to the burn center at Sherman Oaks Community Hospital. He was listed in satisfactory condition with second- and third-degree burns to his right hand and first-degree burns to his face, Fire Department spokeswoman Barbara Sapien said. The unidentified firefighter was expected to be released today.
Battalion Chief Horst Zimmerman said the man was injured about 11:55 a.m. while using a torch to ignite piles of brush near Piuma and Saddle Peak roads.
