MEXICO CITY — Fire swept through a squatter settlement of cardboard shacks near a downtown market, killing seven people and injuring seven others, reports said Tuesday.
At least three of the dead were children, reports said, and two of the injured were Red Cross workers.
The settlement was home to the families of 62 street vendors, who had put up the shacks several months ago to dramatize their need for decent housing, reports said. Officials were investigating the cause of the fire late Monday.
