Court Halts Extradition to S.D. of Suspect in Serial Killings

An Alabama appeals court on Monday stayed the extradition of a man wanted by San Diego authorities in the serial killings of five women.
Cleophus Prince Jr., arrested March 3 in Birmingham, was ordered into the custody of San Diego police Monday morning by Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge James H. Hard.
But only a few hours later, three judges on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals unanimously stayed Prince’s extradition.
Alabama state prosecutors have until Wednesday to respond to the stay, said a clerk for the appeals court.
Prince, 23, is being held without bond on a fugitive-from-justice charge in the stabbing deaths last year of five women in the Clairemont and University City areas of San Diego.
Prince’s Alabama attorney, Roger Appell, said he was elated by the appeals court decision.
“Go tell the D.A. that he’s not going to get him (Prince) yet,” he said.
Appell said he continues to fight the extradition, mainly because the warrants refer to Cleophus Prince, not Cleophus Prince Jr.
