American National Veterans Inc. has been ordered by the City Council to stop soliciting donations in the city for at least four weeks while city officials obtain and examine financial documents from the organization.
In the wake of complaints from residents and a Fedco supermarket that solicitors were harassing shoppers, the city has sought to revoke a solicitation permit granted to American National Veterans last July.
The city asked the organization for financial information to determine how contributions collected in Costa Mesa have been or will be distributed, but the the company has been involved in an audit by the state attorney general’s office and does not have access to its documents, said attorney Paul F. Sollami, who represents the Colton-based company.
