Panel Backs Curbs on ‘900’ Numbers

WASHINGTON — A House subcommittee Thursday approved restrictions on “900” telephone numbers and telephone and fax advertisements.
Calls to the 900 numbers, which provide news, sports scores, stock market prices and other information, typically cost several dollars a minute. Many callers, especially young children and teen-agers, have run up bills for thousands of dollars.
One measure would let telephone customers block access to the 900 lines. It would also require the 900 numbers to tell callers in advance what information was offered and the cost and allow them to hang up without charge.
