PADRES UPDATE : NOTEBOOK / BOB NIGHTENGALE : Benes Wants Phillies Again

SAN DIEGO — Padre starter Andy Benes still was upset Thursday morning over the taunts he heard Wednesday night after Philadelphia first baseman Ricky Jordan hit a grand slam, and eagerly awaits another chance to face the Phillies.
“There’s a time and place for everything,” said Benes, frustrated with his 0-4 record and 4.46 ERA. “What comes around goes around. And believe me, it’s going to come around again. And I’m not going to forget. I told him he’s not good enough to pop off like he does. I’ll face him again.
“And I throw a lot harder than he does.”
Said Jordan: “I wasn’t trying to show the guy up. I was just happy. . . . If it were a single or double, I would have done the same thing.”
Padre reliever Larry Andersen, who was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a herniated disc in his neck, still showed up Thursday for the game and even suited up.
“I’m going to be here for moral support,” he said. “I really didn’t even want to go on the disabled list, but it’s not fair to the Padres not knowing when I’ll be available to pitch.”
Reliever John Costello, who was notified during the first game of the doubleheader Wednesday against triple-A Portland that he was being recalled: “I took the first flight I could. I didn’t want them changing their minds about me, too.
“It’s a great feeling being back. I know a lot of things can happen, but I know if I do well, I’ll be here. If not, I’ll be back at Las Vegas.”
Pitcher Mike Dunne, who was cut by the Padres in spring training, is expected to sign a minor-league contract today with the Chicago White Sox, and be assigned to their Class A Florida State team. He has spent the past six weeks in Peoria, Ill., to be with his father, who is dying of cancer. . . . Bill Zavestoski, official scorer, changed two scoring calls after the game. He took away an error Wednesday night charged to Padre first baseman Fred McGriff, and then took away an error Thursday charged to Padre third baseman Jim Presley. The repercussion: Padre starter Derek Lilliquist’s 6.23 ERA turned to 11.42. . . . Padre right fielder Tony Gwynn celebrated his 31st birthday Thursday. . . . Garry Templeton’s single in the eighth inning was the Padres’ first pinch-hit since Marty Barrett doubled April 22 in San Francisco. . . . The Padres’ game Tuesday against the New York Mets has been moved back to 7:35 p.m. to accommodate ESPN-TV. . . . Tuesday’s Cap Day crowd of 43,513 was the Padres’ second largest for a midweek day game.
