COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Big UNLV Inning Buries UC Irvine in Final Game

Nevada Las Vegas scored eight runs in the seventh inning and defeated UC Irvine, 17-7, Sunday in the final Big West Conference baseball game for both teams.

The Rebels sent 13 batters to the plate in the seventh, six of whom got hits off Irvine pitchers Gabe Sollecito and Mike Calvert. Irvine committed two errors, but all except one of the runs were earned.

Tory Miran had four hits and three runs batted in, Nick Kuster had four hits and two RBIs, and Lino Diaz had three hits and one RBI for Las Vegas (27-23, 11-9).

Irvine pitcher Joe Sewell (4-7), who took over for starter Mike Rood in the second inning, allowed three runs in three innings and took the loss.

Steve Ott had two hits, David Deiter had one hit and two RBIs, and Brian Young had two hits and one RBI for the Anteaters (24-32, 6-15).

Doug Vanderweele (5-4), who allowed four runs on four hits in five innings, got the victory for Las Vegas.

In the NCAA Division II West Regional softball tournament:

Portland State 8, Chapman 0--Portland State, top-ranked nationally, scored all eight runs off Chapman starter Jacki Blake (27-6), and eliminated the Panthers. Chapman finished the season 47-13 and ranked second nationally.
