CITY SECTION 4-A DIVISION BASEBALL PLAYOFFS : Poly Comes Back to Beat Palisades

Poly High used a four-run outburst in the sixth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and hand visiting Palisades an 8-6 defeat Wednesday in the first round of the City Section 4-A Division baseball playoffs.
Poly (23-3) trailed, 6-4, entering the bottom of the sixth inning. But Pedro Medina doubled in a run and Raul Torres, who finished two for three, added a run-scoring single that tied the score, 6-6.
Marlon McKinney’s two-out single scored two runs and gave Poly an 8-6 lead. Robert Barron (5-0) held Palisades scoreless in the seventh.
Birmingham 4, Kennedy 3--Jason Mansfield’s two-run double highlighted a three-run fourth inning that extended Birmingham’s lead to 4-0 in a game at Kennedy.
Noah Kirshbaum (8-3) and Mansfield, who earned his first save, combined to limit Kennedy (16-9) to five hits. Mike Malkin had two hits for Birmingham (14-11).
Mike McMullen (7-3) took the loss for Kennedy, which committed four errors.
Monroe 4, Granada Hills 3--Juan Navarro had two hits, including a two-run single with two out in the fifth that allowed Monroe (14-7) to overcome a 3-2 deficit at Monroe.
For Monroe, Noel Toledo was two for two and drove in two runs and Jorge Dorado (7-1) struck out five and allowed only four hits.
Bryan Martin was two for three, and Scott Berger hit a two-run double in the fourth that gave Granada Hills (16-9-1) a 3-2 lead.
Banning 4, Van Nuys 0--Mike Busby threw his second no-hitter of the season for top-seeded Banning (18-6) in a game at Banning.
Busby (10-0) struck out 11 and threw just 95 pitches. He did not allow any of Van Nuys’ four baserunners past second base. Van Nuys finished 6-16.
San Fernando 6, University 2--Jorge Gonzales and Raymond Rivera combined to limit third-seeded University to three hits at University. Jose Nunez, Luis Rodriguez, Damacio Mendoza and Art Tarin each had two hits to pace a 12-hit attack for San Fernando (14-10).
El Camino Real 4, San Pedro 2--Gregg Sheren was two for three and drove in three runs for the Conquistadores at San Pedro.
Sheren hit a two-run home run in the first inning and singled home a run in the third. Mike Smith tripled and scored a run for El Camino Real (12-8).
