Holland’s Erik Breukink overcame a tire change and a 50-second deficit Sunday to win the Tour Du Pont bicycle race at Wilmington, Del.
Breukink, 27, won the overall title by capturing the 16.1-mile individual time trial on the final day of the 11-day, 1,100-mile race. He defeated Atle Kvalsvoll of Norway by 12 seconds for the overall title and won $50,000.
Breukink, the next-to-last of 91 riders on the course, got a flat tire about 15 minutes into Sunday’s stage, which included about 30 sharp turns. But after getting a quick tire change, he made up ground in a hurry.
