Corona 2, Laguna Hills 1--Brian Lucatero drove in two runs and Corona held off a Laguna Hills rally in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.
Laguna Hills (16-11) had three of its six hits off Corona starter Brian Rios (4-0) in the seventh. With one out, Dave Cosgrove and Brett Nista hit back-to-back singles. After Jim Reynolds struck out, Dale Douglass drilled a single to right to drive in Cosgrove and advance Nista to third. Reliever Shane Curran came on to strike out Ted Wilkes to end the game.
Lucatero, Corona’s No. 9 batter, victimized Wilkes (4-2) twice. He had a two-out single to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the second. He then laid down a squeeze bunt to score Jason Edmon for what turned out to be the winning run in the seventh.
Antelope Valley 7, La Quinta 6--La Quinta had the lead three times before finally losing the game when Antelope Valley (15-9) scored in the bottom of the seventh. Walter Dawkins hit a home run for La Quinta (21-7).
In a 1-A game:
Orange Lutheran 17, Beaumont 0--J.P. Presley went four for four with three runs scored and four RBIs for Orange Lutheran (17-8), which will play Coast Union (9-7) in the quarterfinals Friday.
