Many of the top high school track and field performers in the San Gabriel Valley will be bidding for berths in the state meet when they compete in the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Cerritos College in Norwalk.
Topping the list is senior Juliana Yendork of Walnut, who established a national high school record in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet 6 inches in the CIF divisional final last week. Yendork, who won the 2-A Division title by more than five feet, is also a heavy favorite in the long jump after winning with a divisional-record leap of 20-1 3/4.
Among other top girl competitors from the valley are Akua Sutherland of Muir in the 100-meter low hurdles and triple jump, Phetima Woods of Duarte in the 100-meter dash and the 100 low hurdles, and Myra Smith of Workman in the discus and shot put.
Muir, which easily captured its third consecutive girls’ 4-A Division title last week, also is a strong threat in the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relays.
In the boys’ division, two of the front-runners figure to be Matthew Harding and Steve DeBerry of San Dimas. Harding will compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter runs and DeBerry in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.
Two others to watch are Tyrone Edwards of Nogales in the long jump and Don Jackson of Duarte in the 300 hurdles.
The top five finishers in each event advance to the state meet May 31 and June 1 at Cerritos College.
Longtime Coach John Scolinos and outfielder Ramiro Garcia of Cal Poly Pomona have received top honors on the 1991 All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball team.
Scolinos, who led the Broncos to a 27-26 record and a tie for the conference title in his 44th year of coaching, shares Coach of the Year honors in the CCAA with Steve McFarland of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Jack Smitheran of UC Riveride. San Luis Obispo, Riverside and Pomona tied for first in the CCAA at 18-12.
Garcia shared conference Most Valuable Player honors with first baseman Darrell Conner of Cal State Dominguez Hills. As a senior, he was one of the top hitters in the conference with a .386 average.
The Broncos also placed senior pitcher Wayne Koklys and junior outfielder Chris Hunt on the all-conference first team. Hunt posted a .328 batting average.
Senior pitcher Abdom Pinon of Cal State Los Angeles also made the first team as a utility player. Pinon finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in victories, complete games, innings pitched and starts.
Cal Poly also placed junior pitcher Daniel Mead, senior catcher Shannon Wright, sophomore infielder Grant Stephens and sophomore outfielder Scott Daniels on the second team, and Cal State Los Angeles added junior outfielder Dave Johnston and junior designated hitter Dan Parente.
Former West Covina High and Mt. San Antonio College pitcher Vince Aguilar of Cal State Dominguez Hills also made the second team. He is a senior.
Neither Cal Poly Pomona nor Cal State Los Angeles is expected to challenge for the team title, but both will send strong contingents to the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships today through Saturday at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Tex.
Pomona has two individual title threats in the men’s division with Don Parish in the long and triple jumps and Marvin Williams in the hammer throw. Parish, a transfer from the University of Houston, ranks among the national leaders with school records of 54-1 3/4 in the triple jump and 24-7 1/4 in the long jump, and Williams has a strong qualifying mark of 200-1 in the hammer after winning the event in 1989.
The Broncos also have a top sprinter in the women’s division in Jakki Henderson, who has swift qualifying marks of 24.50 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 53.16 seconds in the 400.
The Cal State Los Angeles men are led by Chris Wilcox, who has a school record of 7,807 points in the decathlon, and Chris Doering, who has a school record of 229-4 in the javelin.
The Golden Eagles are led in the women’s division by automatic qualifiers Cheryl Porter in the 100 meters, Margo Grant in the 200 meters, Marlene Wilcox in the 800 meters, Kimya Phillips in the discus and Ana Marie Ralph in the long jump.
