American Stores Co.: The Salt Lake City firm that operates 1,840 supermarkets and drugstores under names including Lucky Stores, Sav-on, Osco, Jewel, Star and Acme said first-quarter net income rose 28% to $35.9 million, while revenue increased 2% to $5.411 billion. The firm said the latest quarter included a loss of 2 cents a share from the $248-million sale last month of its 145 Alpha Beta stores in Southern California to Food 4 Less. The 1990 quarter included a gain of 3 cents a share from an asset sale.
