GTE Corp. Unit to Cut 4,900 Employees: The unit, GTE Telephone Operations, will cut its work force over the next four years because of its merger with Contel Corp., which was the biggest in the history of the telecommunications industry. GTE Telephone Operations, based in Irving, Tex., has about 115,000 employees. The reductions will be accomplished mainly through normal attrition and early retirement plans, the firm said.
