COSTA MESA : Bicycle Grand Prix to Pump Up Dollars

The second annual Costa Mesa Grand Prix bicycle race is expected to attract up to 1,000 racers Sunday, raising as much as $10,000 for charity.
Money generated by the race will benefit the Vantage Foundation, a Costa Mesa-based organization that trains people with developmental disabilities. Most of its clients are in the process of moving out of Fairview State Hospital, said Director Debbie Marsteller.
Races begin at 7 a.m. and continue throughout the day. The featured pro race is at 4 p.m., which will be started by a President Bush look-alike. All of the bikers are licensed by the U.S. Bicycling Federation.
The 1-mile race course starts on Sunflower Avenue between Cadillac and Hyland avenues. Admission and parking, at Harbor Gateway Business Park, are free.
Marsteller said the race will raise between $7,000 and $10,000 for Vantage.
