From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The aircraft carrier Midway evacuated 1,500 Air Force personnel and completed the removal of U.S. families from Subic Bay Naval Base, threatened by possible fresh eruptions from Mt. Pinatubo. The personnel, the first of 4,500 to be withdrawn, were being taken to Cebu for flights out of the Philippines. U.S. spokesmen said Clark Air Base, covered by ashes and debris from the volcano, would be shut for six months, although most services at Subic Bay Naval Base could be restored within two to three weeks.
