California IN BRIEF : BERKELEY : 17 Arrested at People’s Park Protest

Police arrested 17 demonstrators at People’s Park as protests continued against volleyball courts erected on the site of 1960s peace demonstrations. About 150 people protesting the city’s renovation project disrupted a volleyball game shortly after noon, throwing trash on the court, police said. Demonstrators marched through the streets but returned to the park and tore down one of two nets, police said. The demonstrators were arrested for misdemeanor trespassing, UC Berkeley Police Lt. William Cooper said.
