Broccoli Should Be Planted in Fall

Q: Each year I plant broccoli in my spring garden and each year instead of heads, I get a mass of yellow flowers. What am I doing wrong?

A: In Southern California, broccoli should be planted in the fall, not in the spring. When planted in the spring, weather conditions usually cause the plants to flower before they form heads.
