Cambodia Says Peace Talks Will Go On

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — The Moscow-backed government in Phnom Penh considers the Soviet coup an internal affair that will not affect talks to end Cambodia’s 12-year-old civil war, a Foreign Ministry official said Tuesday.
The government, installed by Vietnam in 1979, has been armed by the Soviet Union in its fight against a guerrilla alliance supported by China and the United States.
The factions are due to meet for critical negotiations in Pattaya, Thailand, next week.
Earlier in Bangkok, a senior Cambodian moderate played down the impact of the removal of Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev and said there should be no turning back on the road to peace.
Vice Foreign Minister Sok An, a moderate visiting Bangkok, said he is still optimistic about the outcome of next week’s peace talks.
