San Gabriel : Cellular Phone Antennas
The City Council voted 3 to 1 Tuesday to allow a cellular-telephone firm to install relay antennas on the roof of the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium, despite objections that the equipment would clash with the building’s historic look.
Under the agreement, PacTel Cellular will pay $1,000 a month in rent to the city to put three dish antennas on the roof and a series of flat antenna panels along its edge. The company also plans to build a 20-by-20-foot shelter on the ground near the building.
Councilman John Tapp opposed the installation, arguing it would detract from the 64-year-old auditorium’s mission-style facade. Supporters said the equipment will be painted to blend in and would not be noticeable on the roof.
