Dan Angress of Corona del Mar was to attempt to swim from Catalina Island to the mainland today to raise money for the Amparo Youth Shelter of Garden Grove.
Angress, a 34-year-old marketing manager, was expected to leave Catalina Island about midnight Friday and reach the Palos Verdes peninsula between 8:30 and 10 a.m. today.
The Amparo Shelter is part of the Orange County Youth and Family Services, which provides emergency care for abused and runaway boys and girls from 11 to 17.
