With the motto “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone . . .,” a group of volunteers will begin leading free hikes through Palo Comado Canyon in October in an effort to raise public awareness of the area.
The Cheeseboro Canyon Guides will take hikers on series of easy to moderate walks through the canyon and to the Rancho Simi overlook of Palo Comado Canyon, an area in the Santa Monica Mountains near the site of the proposed Jordan Ranch development. The area is south of Simi Valley.
“It is our hope to provide environmental information about the parks and to educate the public about their value,” said Molly Jordan, organizer of the guides. She also said the hikes will help inform visitors of “the negative impacts” of the proposed swap of 59 acres of federal parkland for more than 5,000 acres of private property in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica mountains.
The series of hikes, including those specifically for horseback riders, mountain bikers, children and the disabled, are scheduled on weekends beginning Oct. 27 and continuing through December, Jordan said.
For reservations and information, contact Jordan at (818) 991-0659.
