A Superior Court judge declared a mistrial Saturday in the case against Totoa Pohahau, one of two men charged in the so-called “911” beating death of a college student. The jury, which deliberated for five days, deadlocked 9 to 3 on whether to convict Pohahau of second-degree murder. Pohahau, 20, was on trial for his part in the death of Scott Quackenbush, a Fresno State University student whose calls to an emergency operator went unheeded for more than an hour last Sept. 29. His body was found several days later behind a gas station near Candlestick Park. A new trial will begin on Wednesday, if the prosecution seeks one. Another defendant, Siosiua (Josh) Livai, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on Thursday and faces up to four years in prison.
