Cray Announces Cheaper Supercomputers: Eagan, Minn.-based Cray Research Inc. announced a new range of supercomputers aimed at first-time commercial buyers, and said it would bring super-computing within the range of hundreds of new customers. In the new range, the CRAY Y-MP EL costs from $300,000 to $1 million, compared to $25 million for Cray’s top-range model. Originally used for scientific research such as fundamental physics and for long-term weather forecasting, their range of applications has broadened. Companies now use them to speed up the design process in automobiles and aircraft and for molecular design in the petrochemical industry.
