SANTA ANA — A 17-year-old Santa Ana youth who was standing on a street corner was shot and critically wounded Thursday afternoon by another youth on a bicycle, police said.
The victim was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he remained in critical condition on a life support system Thursday night, Police Lt. Robert Helton said.
The victim, who was not identified, is a junior at Santa Ana High School and may be affiliated with a gang, Helton said.
The victim was standing at the corner of Booth and Walnut streets at 2:50 p.m. when a boy on a blue-and-white bicycle rode by.
“The suspect then fired, striking the victim in the head, then rode away” west on Walnut, he said.
Santa Ana High was scheduled to play its homecoming game Thursday night against Ocean View High School of Huntington Beach. Police are also investigating the possibility that the shooting may have been prompted by the impending game, Helton said.
