*** Mingus Dynasty, “The Next Generation,” Columbia.
A septet mixing old Mingus hands and young bloods tackles rarely heard early compositions and new pieces developed from melodic snippets taped while the bassist-composer was alive. The ensemble work is strong, particularly on the rambunctious “Opus Three,” but overall only George Adams’ tenor and Jack Walrath’s trumpet solos stand out.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent). A rating of five stars is reserved for classic reissues or retrospectives.
