SAN CLEMENTE : Group Soliciting Funds May Be Bogus
- Share via
Police are warning residents to beware of a possibly bogus organization attempting to solicit money by claiming to be affiliated with the San Clemente Police Department.
Several residents have complained to police in recent weeks after being contacted by an organization that calls itself the Motorcycle Police Officer’s Assn.
The group, which has been soliciting by telephone, has been falsely telling residents that they have the Police Department’s endorsement to collect charity funds, Sgt. Jim Thomas said.
“We don’t know anything about this organization,” Thomas said. “According to the calls that we’ve been getting from citizens, the name of our department has been coming up in several of the discussions and we are not aware of any kind of fund-raising drive.”
Thomas said that although there is a chance that the Motorcycle Police Officer’s Assn. may turn out to be legitimate, he said the organization has not been given permission to use the department’s name nor has it contacted the department to make such a request.
Anyone with any information regarding the telephone solicitations is asked to call the San Clemente Police Department at (714) 361-8201.
