âAnd now, weâre going to play a little game,â the psychologist says. Just a little something to probe the psyche. He asks if we like games.
Sure. âLike the cemetery game,â we say.
We explain: Whenever Mom or Dad drove the car past a cemetery, we would have to cross our fingers and eyes, hold our breath, touch a button and take our feet off the floor.
âChildhood games can be so peculiar,â the psychologist says. âThey can become a part of us. Itâs a wonder that weâre able to outgrow them.â
Weâre silent.
âSurely you donât play this game today?â he asks.
One canât be too careful, we say.
He stares at us for a moment and shifts in his seat.
âLetâs continue,â he says. âIâll hold up these ink blots, and you tell me what you see. How does that sound?â
Fire away, we say . . .
Oh, this first one is easy. Itâs a picture of Jung.
âJung?â he asks. âCarl Jung? Whatâs he doing?â
Eating, we say. Eating gnocchi.
âIn a nice, light tomato sauce,â we add.
He puts down the card and scratches his head.
Do we see anyone else?
Yes. A waiter.
Describe him, he says.
Short. Funny hat. Pointed shoes. Big belt buckle.
âA gnome,â the therapist says.
âSon-of-a-gun,â we say.
He whistles.
âThis gnome is talking to Jung about something,â we say.
âAbout what?â the psychologist asks.
âGnosticism . . . but Jung ainât buying.â
âI need a glass of water,â the shrink says.
âLetâs move on,â he says. âWhat about this card?â
Another easy one, we say.
