Light welterweight Vernon Forest settled for a silver medal in the World Amateur Boxing Championships Saturday at Sydney, Australia, but that wasn’t bad for a guy who wasn’t even supposed to be on the United States team.
Forrest lost, 32-9, to Konstantin Tszyu of the Soviet Union in the 139-pound final. Forrest made the team because Terronn Millett is recuperating from a gunshot wound he received as a holdup victim.
Eric Griffin won the gold medal at 106 pounds and Larry Donald took the bronze in the super heavyweight class for the United States.
Cuba, which had six boxers in the 12 finals, finished with four golds, two silvers and three bronzes.
