Fuerbringer, the only returning player from Estancia’s State Division III championship team, had a bit of revenge on his mind when the Eagles met Tustin for the championship of the Coast Christmas Classic last week. “He had mentioned to me before the game that he thought Tustin was the only team that really kicked our butts last year,” Coach Tim O’Brien said. “They really beat us soundly and he was hoping we would get a chance to play them again. He got his wish on that one.” Trailing by four with less than a minute left in regulation, Fuerbringer made four free throws to send the game into overtime. He scored the first two points of overtime to finish with a game-high 28 and Estancia, now ranked third in the county, defeated the Tillers, 57-52. “He probably played one of the best games of his career,” O’Brien said. “He’s starting to take over a game more consistently rather than just in stretches.”
Other top performers:
Reggie Geary, who scored 24 points in No. 1 Mater Dei’s 64-62 victory over Ocean View and 13 points as the Monarchs defeated No. 2 Capistrano Valley, 68-59.
Barclay Harty, who scored two goals as Servite upset then-No. 9 Villa Park, 2-0, in a nonleague soccer match.
Matt Padgett, a Canyon wrestler who won the 160-pound division of the Estancia tournament.
Jocques Wright, who averaged 21 points for St. Michael’s in three Santa Maria Valley Christian tournament games. He scored 37 points in an 85-62 loss to Valley Christian in the consolation championship game.
