The man shot to death by police in the parking lot of a supermarket was identified Tuesday as Joseph H. Kim, 18, of Stanton.
Police said Kim, armed with a pistol, was shot Monday after he emerged from a car from which a woman had just fled.
Neither the district attorney’s office nor police would release the names of the officers involved in the shooting.
The two officers arrived at the A.R. Supermarket, 8281 Garden Grove Blvd., shortly after 1:30 p.m. after receiving calls about a possible sexual assault inside a car, police said. The officers reportedly saw a woman run from the car as Kim emerged with a gun. A witness said he ignored the officers’ orders.
Store Manager Richard Kim, no relation to Joseph Kim, said the woman told employees that the man had put a gun to her rib cage and demanded the keys to her car. The woman, Kim said, pleaded with the robber, telling him: “I have a son your age.”
“She was shaken,” Kim said. “She could not speak clearly. She wanted to to call her family.”
Officials said that the dead man had no adult record with the Department of Correction or a juvenile record.
