Tandem Expects First-Quarter Loss: Citing the recession and changes in the industry, Tandem Computers Inc. said it probably will post an operating loss for the first quarter of fiscal 1992 and will restructure operations. Tandem, known for “fault-tolerant” computers with redundant parts to prevent crashes, said it will take a $90-million restructuring charge for the quarter, which ended Dec. 31. The company did not estimate the amount of the loss but said it would not be solely because of the restructuring. Revenue for the quarter should be modestly above that of a year ago, said Tandem, which expects to reduce its work force of about 11,000 by 6% during fiscal 1992.
