ANKARA, Turkey — Fifty-two people were rescued Sunday after being buried twice by successive avalanches in snowbound southeastern Turkey, a local official said.
The avalanches came amid the worst snowfalls in three decades in the region. Nearly 220 people have been killed by the storms this month.
The first avalanche struck on Saturday evening, burying 70 villagers from Artili in two houses where they had taken shelter, said Deputy Governor Ahmet Soley of Batman province. All were rescued Sunday, he said.
But when another avalanche struck the same area later Sunday, 52 of the 70 were trapped again in a house, he said. The other 18 were not affected.
