CAMARILLO : School District Must Cut Its Budget by $117,000 in 1992-93

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School District must cut $117,000 to balance its 1992-93 budget, officials said last week.

Current estimates show that the district will have a deficit of $345,880 in the next fiscal year if it continues to spend at current levels, budget director Jan Maez said.

The fiscal year starts July 1.

Spending is projected at $24.8 million for the next fiscal year, while revenues are expected to be nearly $24.5 million, she said.

Maez said that all but $117,000 of the $345,880 shortfall will be covered by reserve funds, leaving $750,000 in reserves, or about 3%, as recommended by state finance officials.

The projections are based on an assumption that the state will give the district a 1.5% increase over last year’s funding.

The amount that will need to be trimmed from the 1992-93 fiscal package may grow if the state does not grant the increase.

“That number can only grow larger,” she said.

The $1.8-million worth of cuts the budget committee had to make last year at this time will remain in effect, forcing the 60-member committee to ax funds from other areas, Maez said.

During preparations for the 1991-92 budget, the committee decreased instructional supplies by 25%; sliced $340,000 from the district office in supplies, travel and salaries for positions lost to attrition; and eliminated all capital outlays, among other cuts, Maez said.

The committee consists of parents, principals, teachers and classified employees.
