OUTLOOK

Pitching is the key position in softball and the Vaqueros feature one of the best in the county in Destiny Mollison, who should make Rancho Alamitos highly competitive in the league despite having only one senior on the roster. The all-league right-hander won 10 games last season, had a 1.09 earned-run average, struck out 189 and threw three no-hitters. Her younger sister, Cherish, will catch. Brierly realizes that Destiny is the key to his team. “Softball is such a one-dimensional sport because of pitching,” Brierly said. “If we can make the (opposing) teams earn their runs, we’ll be in the games. But if we make the boo-boos (defensively), we are in trouble.” Brierly said Otto is also a very effective pitcher. “She could probably start in many high schools as a pitcher,” he said. The Vaqueros lack depth offensively, with Littman (.369 batting average and .980 fielding percentage) and Agpalsa (.278) expected to carry the load. “We are so young, that when we face great pitching, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Brierly, in his third season with the Vaqueros. “We’ll have to manufacture runs somehow.”
