Caterpillar May Replace Strikers: Caterpillar Inc., caught in a stubborn labor dispute with the United Auto Workers, could be getting ready to replace strikers and impose its own contract on union employees, industry analysts say. When the Peoria, Ill.-based company announced Friday that contract talks with the UAW had reached an impasse after five months, Caterpillar invoked labor laws allowing for the unilateral imposition of its own contract. Caterpillar is the world’s biggest manufacturer of earthmoving and construction equipment.
