8 Killed and 21 Injured as Fighting Increases in Croatian Trouble Spots

At least eight people were killed and 21 others wounded in fighting with artillery, mortars and machine guns Saturday in Croatian trouble spots where U.N. peacekeeping troops are to be deployed.

The Yugoslav army said two of its soldiers were killed and seven were wounded seriously in fighting near Pakrac, eastern Croatia, which included a barrage of 20 howitzer shells fired by Croatian militiamen at four villages.

Croatian radio reported two civilians were killed and one wounded in shelling near Osijek. A Croatian soldier was killed and five civilians were wounded by sniper fire and mortars near Pakrac.

A Croatian soldier was killed and two others were wounded in a missile attack east of Pakrac and a soldier was killed and four wounded in fighting near the Pakrac hospital, it added.

The radio also said a Croatian soldier was killed and two others were wounded in artillery and mortar attacks east of Pakrac in the Slavonski Brod region.

The upsurge in fighting occurred in areas of eastern Croatia where part of a planned 14,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force is due to be deployed by the end of April.
