Calling Vietnam: Where AT&T; goes, Sprint is not far behind.
A week after American Telephone & Telegraph announced that it is reaching out to touch Vietnam, Sprint Corp. said it, too, will provide direct-dial service to that Southeast Asian nation once it gets U.S. government approval.
The Kansas, Mo.-based telecommunications company said Wednesday that it plans to offer the same rates and services as AT&T.;
The list includes a special messenger service that will allow U.S. callers to send messages to friends and relatives in Vietnam who do not have telephones. The messages, delivered by couriers of Hanoi-based Vietnam Telecom International, will specify a time when the Vietnamese recipient can make a collect call to the sender in the United States.
Sprint will also provide its calling-card holders who travel in Vietnam with a local toll-free number that connects directly with a Sprint operator in the United States. This will eliminate language problems for U.S. business travelers in Vietnam, said Sprint spokesman Vince Hovanec.
