OPEC Fears Attack on Oil Industry: Some two dozen oil-producing nations expressed concern about efforts to limit use of their fuel to ease the threat of global warming. After a daylong meeting in Vienna, the nations issued a statement calling for extensive studies on the causes and effects of global warming. Earlier, OPEC President Jibril Aminu warned the oil industry could come under an “almighty onslaught” at the Earth Summit sponsored by the United Nations in June in Brazil. Aminu, who is the Nigerian oil minister, said worries about global warming may be motivated more by political than scientific factors.
