HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS : La Jolla’s Conda, Elsberry Cruise to Victories

SAN DIEGO — La Jolla High teammates James Conda, who is top-seeded, and second-seeded Jon Elsberry moved one step closer to a championship showdown in the San Diego Section individual boys’ tennis tournament Tuesday. Both players won their third-round matches in straight sets at Poway High.
Conda and Elsberry could be on a collision course to meet in the finals. And if they do, it won’t be merely a clash between teammates but a war between best friends. Conda used to live with fellow senior Elsberry. Both have been to a section final before--as doubles partners.
But Conda, the 1991 singles champion, has been there twice and this year it is Elsberry’s job to knock him off. Conda breezed against Keith Wyler of Bishop’s, 6-2, 6-1. Elsberry defeated Andre Hasselink of Bishop’s, 6-2, 6-3.
As doubles partners, Conda and Elsberry lost the 1990 championship to former La Jolla teammates Tim Kreysing and Jimmy Brown, 6-2, 7-5. Concentrating on singles last year, Conda routed Jerry Miyamoto of Patrick Henry, 6-1, 6-0.
Others to advance Tuesday were third-seeded Joe Barbarie of University City and No. 4-seed Tim Burke of San Pasqual. Barbarie defeated Vo Chu of Serra, 6-3, 6-3. Burke handled Jeff Sealey of Mira Mesa, 6-0, 6-2. Conda will face fifth-seeded Taryn Burgk of Torrey Pines today. Burgk beat San Pasqual’s Jeff Young, 6-1, 6-0. Elsberry will play No. 8-seed Mikko Salminvuo of Torrey Pines.
