Wilson Administration Cabinet member Maureen DiMarco has resigned from the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education to devote more time to her duties as state secretary of child development and education.
In a statement to the board Tuesday night, DiMarco said: “I’ve reached the conclusion that I can no longer continue my service as a trustee to the degree that I feel it requires and serve the governor to the degree that he deserves and requires.”
Her effective date of resignation will be included in a letter to county Supt. John F. Dean, as the law requires. Plans for the school district to fill the board position are pending.
DiMarco’s career in education includes nearly 20 years in the classroom and at the district, county and state levels. In 1990, she served as president of the Orange County School Boards Assn. and the California School Boards Assn. She was the second Orange County school board member to hold the top CSBA post. She has served on the Garden Grove Unified board for more than 10 years.
In 1991, she assumed the newly created Cabinet post, in which she is responsible for advising the governor on issues relating to children and education, including mental health, nutrition and prenatal care.
