Mears’ Wrist Surgery Means He Is Probably Done for the Year

Rick Mears underwent surgery Wednesday in Indianapolis to repair the right wrist he first injured on May 6 in an accident during practice for the Indy 500.
The surgery is expected to keep the four-time Indy 500 winner out of a race car for at least two months, making it doubtful that he will return this season. The final race is on Oct. 18 at Laguna Seca Raceway near Monterey.
Andrew J. Vicar, a hand and wrist specialist with Orthopaedics Indianapolis Inc., performed the surgery at Methodist Hospital in an outpatient procedure.
Vicar repaired ligament damage, did some minor bone grafting and put a screw in Mears’ wrist where a bone chip fracture had not healed.
