CAMARILLO : Panel Backs Plan to Hang Banners

In a victory for Camarillo merchants, the city Planning Commission has recommended that businesses be allowed to hang banners for up to 90 days a year.
The five merchants who spoke at a public hearing Tuesday thanked the commission for proposing to expand the city’s sign ordinance, which now allows banners only for grand openings.
“The reason we advertise is we want to get people in the door,” said Lonnie Foster, owner of Subway on Arneil Road. “To get them to try us is a never-ending battle. The banner works.”
After the hearing, the commissioners voted 4 to 0 to relay their recommendation to the City Council, which will make the final decision. Commissioner Walt Lusk was absent from the meeting.
The commission sent two options to the council. One calls for banners to be hung during three 30-day periods a year. The other allows for 12 three-day periods a year.
Mark A. Olson, president of the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce, said he was pleased with the commission’s action.
“It’s something that’s good for business and good for the city,” he said.
